Forex Trading Hours - When To Trade?

By Steve Maenshel

Forex trading hours are important for anyone who plans to trade currencies at the Forex exchange market. The Forex market operates twenty four hours a day, five days a week, except for national holidays. Forex trading hours differ due to that various major financial institutions operate in different hours in different time zones.

There are 4 main time zones with different Forex trading hours: USA, Europe, Asia and Australia. For example, Forex opens in Tokyo on Sunday at 23.00 GMT. Tokyo is where the Forex trading week starts. The trading week closes in Chicago at 10 PM on Friday.

Forex market is open at the time of major holidays just as well. However, of course, it's not open in the country where the holiday is celebrated. For example, at the time of a major Christian holiday you can still get foreign currency quotes from the banks of Asian and Muslim countries, and the other way around. Thus, if you feel like trading, you will not have to wait for the holiday to pass in your country; you would just trade with others. It never happens that one holiday would happen in all of the countries all over the world at the same time.

One of the least suitable days for Forex trading is the weekends. This is due to that it is often hard to find a counterpart for your transaction, since the volume of both - sellers and buyers - is much less on the weekends. Novice Forex traders should try to only trade within the Forex trading hours on the weekdays.

Forex is an international currency exchange. This market is continuously working, just like a hive, with zillions of transactions, selling and buying different currencies - Euro, US Dollars, Pounds, Yens, Canadian Dollars and Australian Dollars. You will be able to freely trade on the Forex market within the Forex trading hours.

Why were Forex trading hours established? Why cant the market be open 24/7 without holidays? Forex trading hours are also needed for employees to carry out certain necessary operations to maintain order at the market, as well as for the traders to simply get some "rest".

The residents of different countries can be surprised that Forex trading hours start and end deep at night in their countries, however you should realize that the foreign exchange market works in different time zones, and thus while in some country Forex might seem to work "at night", in other countries Forex trading hours match regular working hours.

Forex trading hours in the main 4 timezones

As mentioned above, Forex market is open 24 hours a day, five days a week (with inactive trading during weekends), so you can participate in the trade virtually day and night. Below are the Forex trading hours, according to the Eastern Time Zone for the four major financial centers:

Tokyo, Trading Hours: 19.00 to 04.00 EST

New York Trading Hours: 08.00 to 17.00

London: 03.00 to 12.00 (noon) EST

Sydney, Trading Hours: 17.00 to 02.00 EST

Forex trading hours are important for the best trading results. Forex market will become somewhat different depending on the Forex trading hours that you will choose for your trades. - 23223

Forex Trade Basics

By Bart Icles

Foreign Exchange, Forex, or just plain FX are the names used to describe the trading of the currencies of the countries around the world. By far, the Forex Market is the largest trading market compared to stock or futures trading market and other investment portfolios. Majority of Forex trading is based on speculation done by individual and institutional speculators which is roughly about 85% of the market, with the remaining 15% of trading for goods and services. Forex trade transactions amount to more than USD 1 - 3 trillion on average in a daily basis.

The main purpose of the Forex market is to help facilitate the trade and investment of various investors of the world by providing the means to exchange one currency to another.

Forex market business is termed as an OTC (over the counter) market, and is facilitated by "interbank" marketing such as email, fax, or phone. For a trade to be consummated there has to be two parties directly involved by way of telephone or electronic networks. Forex Trading is not conducted by a central exchange, nor by one ruling central body but through the many trading centers spread across the world. These are in Sydney, Tokyo, London, Frankfurt, and New York. With a trading system so designed, the Forex market is able to operate non-stop in all days of the weeks except Sundays.

In essence, a currency trade is when there is the simultaneous buying and selling of one currency to another currency - usually for one that it is paired against. This currency combination is termed as a cross, e.g. the EURO/USD, or the GB/Japanese Yen. Currencies that are most commonly traded as known as the "majors" like the EURO/USD, USD/JPY, USD/CHF, and the GBP/USD. The USD is currently ranked as the top traded currency in the world, followed closely behind by the Euro, Japanese Yen, Pound Sterling, Swiss Franc, Australian dollar, Canadian dollar, Swedish Krona, and so on.

Some common yet important Forex trading terms to remember are the spreads and Pips. Spreads means the difference between the price of a currency that any trader can sell at (Bid) and the price a currency can be bought at (Ask). A Pip is the smallest increment by which a cross price changes. In Forex trading a trader may often encounter a 3 Pip spread when trading majors. This spread is seen when comparing the bid and ask price of a paired currency. An example would be: EUR/USD quote is with a bid price of 0. 9876 with an ask price of 0.9879 = USD 0.0003 or 3 pips. - 23223
