Stock Trading and the Importance of Following Rules

By Jim Fredrickson

When it comes to following rules, most traders in the stock and commodity markets let it go in one ear, and out the other. This severely hinders trading. Being a good trader requires a serious amount of time and patience.

To be able to trade well in any market you have to gain the necessary skills. Don't worry, there are many good traders we can emulate. Here we will go over some great stock trading and analysis tips.

In the stock market, you will meet a lot of investors. Basic needs are fulfilled by depending on one another but when it comes to stock investing, you need to be independent. Youre on your own, just like in a battlefield.

You cant control or manipulate the stock market. In a natural environment, like your home, you need to control it (at some point) so that you can fulfill all your desires and needs. If you want to attain the same success in stocks trading, you must be able to control the market at some degree. Even if you can control the social environment, the techniques youve learned cant be applied in the stock market. The only way to effectively manipulate and control the stock market in some way is to be a wise and large trader.

Although you cannot control the markets every move, you can always control yourself. Be your own master. Every piece of information needs to be accounted for when making decisions on what you will do. Learn to create rules for yourself, and never vary from what you have come up with.

Many traders will often find themselves moving away from their rules for one reason or another. Don't be that trader. It is a human condition of ours at times to want to do so. Sometimes the freedoms you enjoy from being a stock trader are the exact thing that can cause your downward spiral. Remember again to set certain boundaries ahead of time, before the trade, and to stick to them.

Are you familiar with any that have had success? If you have, you will certainly know that they are consistent, and level-headed. They follow their plan to a 'T', and make the kind of living that others are envious of. Once you are able to be more like them you can surely reach the same levels of limitless income.

Traders who cannot follow their own game plans are the traders who lose their shirts fast. Take it easy as you begin, risk little, and you will begin to learn how stock trading works.

If youre a newbie, you should learn the basics of stock trading. Find out more info about trading strategies so that you can buy or sell stocks while gaining huge profits. If other people can achieve success in stocks trading, so can you. Start making your investments now and find a good broker; learn to follow trading rules as well. - 23223

Global Macro Investing and the Benefits of Multiple Asset Classes

By Bruce Jones

Most long time investors have heard that diversification is the only free lunch on Wall Street. If you have used a financial advisor to pick your investments for you, you may have been told you were diversified but the way it usually works out your diversification is weak at best and in some cases is almost non existent. Obviously you just need to learn the proper way to diversify.

Most financial advisors will diversify your investments by splitting your money into a few buckets such as domestic stocks, foreign stocks, and then place some in domestic Treasury or investment grade corporate bonds. If all you have is a mix of stocks and bonds you are only diversified into two asset classes while you could be doing so much better.

Diversification done right will not only have you invested in several different asset classes but also in multiple strategies inside each asset class. Ask a global macro trader why they trade this way and they will tell you that being able to go into multiple asset classes is the only way to consistently generate positive returns regardless of what the stock market is doing.

Global macro investors diversify into several different asset classes. Some of the more common ones are domestic stocks, foreign stocks, Treasury bonds, investment grade corporate bonds, junk bonds, foreign government bonds, foreign corporate bonds, commodities, real estate, and currencies. Some people will go as far as to trade in art and other collectibles as they are uncorrelated to regular investments and therefore add benefit if you have expertise in that area.

As traders and investors we should all be looking for the best risk to reward scenarios out there instead of just being involved. If you are doing that then it helps to look at multiple markets so that you can always be putting money at risk in an intelligent manner.

As previously mentioned we can diversify not only by investing in several asset classes but also by investing in strategies with different time horizons. There are successful long term and short term trading funds and if you invest in both you are even more diversified as their returns depend on different factors.

By diversifying both wide and deep you will be able to capture alpha or returns in a more consistent manner. Will you make money every day, week, month, or even year? There are no guarantees but properly diversified you will almost always outperform stock market indexes, especially on a risk adjusted basis.

If you are a relatively active investor you can achieve positive returns in multiple asset classes yourself by building market beating models in different markets. Yes, you can and indeed should use bottoms up research but in the spirit of being efficient with your time you should automate as much as possible so that you are able to be a more efficient global macro trader and miss fewer of the potential opportunities that occur in different markets. - 23223

Forex Trading Systems: The Ins and Outs of Discretionary and Mechanical Systems

By John Eather

There are two basic types of Forex trading systems, termed mechanical and discretionary systems. Mechanical systems provide trading signals that are based on systematic data analysis and other technical analyses. Discretionary systems, on the other hand, use factors that are harder to quantify, like trader experience, and gut feelings about entries and exits. Which one brings better results? And, more importantly, which one best fits your trading style? Let's begin by evaluating the pros and cons of each system.

Advantages A mechanical system can be fully automated and backtested for efficacy. It uses fixed rules and data. Mechanical traders tend to focus less on gut instinct than discretionary traders.

Disadvantages Just about all traders backtest Forex trading systems wrongly. In order to acquire correct outcomes, tick data is needed. However, the Forex market is perpetually in change and has some amount of volatility. Market circumstances may appear similar to a backtest scenario, but they are never exactly the same. A trading strategy that was successessful last year can't be assured of being fruitful this year.

Advantages Discretionary systems are able to easily reconcile to newly ever-dynamic market considerations. Trading conclusions are backed up by experience, and traders use their background knowledge to check which trading signals open larger chances of performing well.

Disadvantages Discretionary systems aren't able to be backtested or automatised, since arriving at a conclusion calls for a human being to analyse marketplace circumstances. Time is required to establish the experience level requisite to reach success in going after trades dependably. This has a tendency to be unsafe in the start.

So, which system is best for Forex traders? The best system is the one that suits your preferences. If you have difficulty following your instincts, then you may fare better with a mechanical system. This will eliminate the need to apply your judgment; you simply accept the trades signaled by the mechanical system.

Likewise, if you are paralyzed by the doubts and emotions that plague many traders, you will also fare better with mechanical systems, since you can simply follow what the system indicates without being overcome by your own mental roadblocks. There will be no more mental anguish over whether to go short, go long, close or open a trade " the mechanical system will indicate this for you.

Notwithstanding, if you've sufficient self-discipline, it'd be advantageous for you to apply a discretionary system. This will grant the highest flexibility in conforming to market conditions, and you'll be able to easily align your trading strategies as the market evolves. E.g., if you've a goal of 30 pips on a long trade but the market embarks on a faster move up than first anticipated, you've the alternative to correct your strategy to turn a profit at 50 pips.

Before deciding whether a discretionary or mechanical trading system is right for you, there are some important things to consider. You will want to make sure that the type of Forex trading system you use matches your personality, or you'll constantly be second guessing your chosen system.

You'll need to establish a few trading rules, and more significantly, deliver the discipline to adhere them. Be ready to formulate the most effective system for yourself. This demands time and commitment, but if you do it the right way, this will compensate you over time in a positive way. - 23223

Forex Trading Plan- Create the Best Plan

By fxreport

Today as the world's economies start to slow down, many people are searching for how to generate extra income to protect themselves for the upcoming tough times ahead. So what are you doing to help you generate extra income? Many smart traders are turning to the stock markets and forex markets to help them generate extra income.

Successful stock market trading begins with a winning trading plan. It's as simple as that. If you develop a well-conceived trading plan to guide your actions in the stock market you will already have the advantage over most of your market competition. Put simply, it gives you the edge you need to win over the long haul when trading the stock market or forex market.

A stock market trading plan will not guarantee your success in the markets, but a good plan will enable you to work methodically toward your stock market trading goals while reviewing on a regular basis what is working and what is not. It will act as a roadmap for your trading journey. It will enable you to respond positively and constructively no matter what happens with your individual trades. And, most importantly, it will help you control the only thing a trader can control: his or her own actions.

Finally, stock market trading is a business. It can be a fascinating and sometimes thrilling business, but in the end it is a business. A trading plan helps you treat it as a business.

Here are some important elements of a trading plan.

1. Why am I trading? What are my goals?

The answers to these questions might seem obvious, but they usually are not. Take some time to ask them of yourself, and seriously consider the answers. You may be surprised by what you learn. And whatever the answers, you will have a clearer picture going forward of what this enterprise means to you, and that will help you survive any rough patches.

2. What markets am I going to trade and why?

It is often best to specialize, especially for beginning stock market traders. Many pros make a great living trading the same stock day every single day for years. Choose a market that is appropriate for your experience level and trading style. Consider other factors such as available margin, volatility and liquidity.

3. What is the concept or philosophy behind your trading methodology?

Your trading system must have a concept behind it. Whether you are a value investor like Warren Buffet or a trend trader like George Soros, you should understand why you are doing what you are doing, how your beliefs about the markets define what you will do as a trader.

4. What will be your specific method?

In other words, specifically how will you execute your trading ideas? Will you buy breakouts or pullbacks? Buy oversold or sell overbought? Or will you use specific technical setups such as moving-average crossovers or another indicator-based strategy? Under exactly what conditions will you enter? When will you know to exit?

5. How much money will you risk on any single trade? On trading in general?

This is critical. Of course, start small. But just as importantly, have a plan in place for how much you will risk, emotions don't cloud your judgment when the time comes. The key is to find an allocation that doesn't cause any stress but still makes the trade worthwhile financially. One of the biggest problems with newer traders is that they are trading way too big in relation to their account size. Like when you are forex trading. Trading forex at 100-1 leverage is like introducing your mistress to your wife. Yes, you can do it, but that doesn't make it a good idea. Normally they don't get along too well.

6. What will my trading rules be?

This is also critical. Your trading rules include entry and exit rules, rules governing maximum daily, weekly or monthly losses, maximum risk on any given trade, the maximum number of trades per week, etc., etc. These rules enforce discipline and keep you out of trouble. What stock price will enter at, what stock price will I will exit. Be discplined.

7. How will I record and evaluate my trading performance?

Allow me to repeat myself: This is critical. In fact, this might be the most important element of trading for new traders in the stock market. A new stock market trader who evaluates his trades, winners and losers, in an effort to learn what works and what does not, will make quantum leaps forward in terms of ability and profitability. If you have a working trading plan and evaluate every single one of your trades after you have closed it you have already beaten 95% of the competition.

8. What are my rules for managing profits?

What's the problem with profits? Well, believe it or not there is one, and it's a serious one. It's called euphoria, and it clouds the judgment perhaps more than any other emotion related to trading. Start piling up the profits for the first time and it won't be long before you are convinced you are king of the world. About 30 seconds later you'll be broke, following a series of unwise and exceedingly risky trades. So have a plan for protecting closed profits when you have reached your goals for the week or the month. Don't give them all back.

9. How will I reward myself for following my trading plan?

Don't leave this out. Following your trading plan will bring rewards in the form of profits, but you should also consciously reward yourself for doing so because it is such an important part of successful trading. So if you finish the week or the month (or even the day) without having broken any of your trading rules, find a way to reward yourself. You deserve it. You are in rare company.

If you follow your plan you are improving your chances of becoming sucessful stock market or forex trader.
